St Joseph’s College proudly hosted the Ipswich East Rotary Club ‘Youth Speaks’ competition on Wednesday 29 January 2025. The College was delighted to field two teams in this prestigious competition in the intermediate and senior categories, with both teams securing first place. Both teams will now compete in the final in the Norwich debating chamber in February.
Megan (Captain), Clara (Proposition) and Holly (Opposition) competed in the Intermediate Competition, and debated the following motion: ‘Does artificial intelligence help or hinder human society?’
Ben (Captain), Alex (Proposition) and Ademide (Opposition) competed in the Senior Competition. They debated the following motion: ‘Does science and logic make religion and superstition irrelevant?’
Dr Briege Rice, Stretch and Challenge Coordinator and History and Politics teacher at St Joseph’s College noted, ‘Working with these students and developing their oracy and public speaking skills through debating is such a joy! These skills are vital in every field, fostering confidence, clear communication and critical thinking. The standard of debating was very high and we are very proud of this extraordinary achievement of our students. We would like to thank the Rotary for their support in fostering key communication skills amongst young people through the Youth Speaks initiative.’
