Artist of the Month – Ed

Whilst I always enjoyed creating art, it was not until I began GCSE that I found that I had a true passion for the subject. Through dedication and hard work, I achieved many final results that I would have previously not have thought possible.

My work is inspired by artists I have studied throughout the course yet whilst I study their own techniques and mediums, I gradually intertwine my own unique style and inspirations. These consist of dramatic tonal sections and mark-making to express deeper emotion and atmosphere in my work.

My work and style vary as I am still attempting to discover what is my favourite medium. Nevertheless, I have found I enjoy a diverse array of printmaking and biro studies. These technically simple yet detailed works are centralised on expressive emotions that are perceived through facial structure and underlining feelings in areas such as the eyes. I also like to apply my skill and interest in Maths into my work, through compositions, scale and patterns.

Whilst I do not aim to directly continue a traditional artistic career, my ambitions lie in the world of engineering and architecture. A separate passion of mine is designing and creating physical products, I am currently working on designing a new pen for drawing which would enable mark-making to be more effective. My artistic studies will strongly help me later on in parts of designing and sharing ideas.

I would advise other art students to always dedicate themselves to everything they do, without my previous determination to work hard at something I was not so naturally excelling at, ultimately this allowed me to progress my skills and achieve greater heights in a different area from academics and sport.
