With an average UCAS points score of 128, delighted St Joseph’s College students are heading off to top academic destinations and to take up a myriad of exciting opportunities – from millinery to world travel. The points tally equates to ABB at A-level and reflects impressive results both on academic A-level courses and on applied vocational courses in Engineering, Digital Media, Sport Coaching & Development, and Business.
Half of the students came away with at least one A*/A grade or equivalent and three-quarters of A-level students achieved A*- C grades across their studies. The College’s Deputy Principal, Mr Sacha Cinnamond, who heads up the school’s academic provision, said the students’ breadth of attainment was particularly impressive, with a number combining top-level sporting triumphs alongside academic success.
‘These impressive and hard-working young people have put clear blue sky between themselves and the difficulties of the pandemic years. It is easy to overlook the fact that their studies could have been severely impacted by the Covid outbreak, but their tenacity has seen them through. We look forward to hearing great things as they move on to the next step of their journey, whether in education or at points across the globe as they take time out to work and travel,’ he said.
Self-describing as ‘St Joseph’s biggest fan’, Stan Warner exemplifies the benefits of combined courses. Stan achieved a triple Starred Distinction in BTEC Sport and added an A-level in Business Studies. He is not letting the grass grow under his feet but heading straight into a marketing apprenticeship before setting off to Thailand, Bali, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, giving this rugby star plenty of scope to keep up the sport.
Two of St Jo’s national cup-winning girls’ football squad also aced the art of combining academic work and sporting attainment. Team captain Emily Bates is heading to Loughborough University to read Psychology, armed with Geography A* and Psychology A at A-level, an A* in her EPQ and Double Distinction * in Sport. Teammate Zofia Szczech will be joining her at Loughborough to read History. Zofia was awarded A* in both English Literature and Psychology and an A in History. To make the most of her time while she was juggling study and football commitments, she hit the laptop on journeys to and from school.
Xavier Baker-Woods, who spent last summer volunteering in India, is on his way to Warwick to study Biomedical Sciences. Xavi achieved straight A grades in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics, plus an A* for his EPQ entitled ‘Diabetes: Demographic Dynamite?
